wildflowers around the highway exit
among hot ribbons of pavement
found me and surprised me
what's flown around the forest shouldn't exist
why do bigots have a monopoly on the beauty?
oh life is so disappointing at times
why must I be forced to hold both in my sights?
the lies and catchflies
the stars and bars and long leaf pines
but if I am right that nylon burns fast and bright

a plastic horse and an old Kubota shaded by apple trees
fruit that's fallen is bruised and softened and eaten by meat bees
each year I wait for the red of ripeness
to coat the skin and show its sweetness
how long?
tetherball and a bow and arrow
hay bales for sharpening my shot
picking clover and falling over
scars on both my knees I got
each year I age the dead keep rising
to show the rotten food uneaten
how long?
take it all away
now the trees are falling down
a turning chainsaw blade
I can still hear the sound
take it all away
now the trees are falling down
is it from old age
or is it from the drought?
take it all away
is this all there is?
the shoveling of piles
considering the rift
should I buy a rifle?

a night of minimal rest
I wake up with no sound from a street
I go as I'm dressed
up the hill to meet for coffee
the fog hangs thick in the air
wetting the earthenware
dirt road turns to pavement
I am pulled by the slope of the land
you still have a green thumb
we don't agree but agree to pretend
oh the jasmine shrouds the stairs
underneath the sun wrought wooden chairs
we've already lost this place
if I'm here I will burn up too
is there any hope in ashes?
is it best to expect solitude?
pour the cream spoon the sugar
the mug sings, I made years ago
we speak of your daughter
who has a daughter in Colorado
some day I'll take a plane out there
I'll fly over smoky air
forced isolation put the world into stark relief
you sprout an avocado
turn the sun into food through a leaf
the two are so hard to square
sometimes almost too much to bare
we've already lost this place
if I'm here I will burn up too
is there any hope in ashes?
is the rest of what's left destitute?

I will find a way to run from this again
from the parking lot
from the clay stained land
from our carport garden
loopers in the leaves eat all my tomatoes
we carry on at speed
take the sweetness from our mouths
I will find a way to the sun from this again
to feel the opening of a rested hand
lie down with me
loopers in the leaves eat everything I grow
we still taste it on our teeth
all this bitterness we swallow
and it draws the life right out of me
like pulling feathers out a pillow
I am anything but patient
stillness ain't silent
stillness moves
I wish it were different
betrayal is violence
and it ensues
